SOH4 Winter Cover Crop Seed Mixes Following Maize
Our SOH4-compliant winter cover crop mixes are designed to protect soil after maize harvest and help you meet the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) SOH4 action. Maize stubbles left bare through winter are prone to erosion, nutrient leaching and runoff. Establishing a winter cover crop reduces these risks while improving soil health and biodiversity.
Key Benefits:
- Meets SFI SOH4 scheme requirements
- Rapid establishment after late maize harvest
- Reduces soil loss, compaction and runoff
- Scavenges nutrients and improves structure
- Supports biodiversity and soil biology
We offer a variety of mixes to suit different soil types, goals and budgets - from cost-effective, single-purpose blends to multi-species, high-biodiversity options.
Our SOH4 mixes typically include quick-establishing species - fast-growing grasses, legumes and/or brassicas, and we can discuss establishment techniques with you, including under-sowing the maize before harvest.

We also offer a range of other cover and catch crop mixes and straights.
Sowing and establishment
- Our quick growing cover crop should be sown as soon as possible after harvesting the maize, in time to establish before winter (usually be no later than around mid-October)
- Alternatively, we can suggest options for under-sowing the maize crop earlier in the year that remain after the maize is harvested
- Once the maize crop has been harvested, you must not apply fertilisers or manures to the winter cover crop during the autumn or winter months
