Straight Game Cover Seed
We supply a comprehensive range of game cover straights, giving you the flexibility to tailor your seed mix to suit your shooting objectives, soil type, and scheme requirements. Whether you're enhancing habitat for pheasants, partridge, or wild birds, or targeting specific Countryside Stewardship (AB9) or SFI actions (AHL2, CAHL2), our straight species offer targeted solutions for structure, feed, and biodiversity.
Core game cover straights
Buckwheat - fast to establish and early flowering. Highly attractive to pollinators and ideal for short-term insect-rich cover. Useful in wild bird seed mixes and AB9 options.
Camelina - a small-seeded oilseed crop with strong environmental credentials. Offers modest cover and good seed value for small farmland birds.
Linseed - light canopy, drought-tolerant and ideal for drier ground. Provides both feed and cover for partridge and other ground-nesting species.
Quinoa - high-energy seed with strong feed value and excellent winter retention. Popular in overwintered wild bird seed plots under stewardship schemes.
Sunflowers - tall and visually striking. Produces high-value seeds for finches, yellowhammers and other seed-eaters. Adds vertical structure to game plots.
Tic Beans - large-seeded legume that offers high feed value for game birds and overwintering species. Fixes nitrogen and works well in AB9/CAHL2 SFI mixes.
Triticale (Winter & Spring) - robust cereal with good height and structure. Excellent for holding birds in the drive. Winter varieties support overwinter cover; spring types are useful for short-term options or late sowing.
Catch crop straights for game plots and stewardship
We also stock a wide selection of catch crop straights used in game cover and stewardship mixes for rapid cover and forage value. These are ideal for short-term game plots, cover strips, or scheme-compliant options such as SAM2/CSAM2, SW6 and AB13.
Forage Rape - quick to establish, providing leafy cover and late-season grazing or feed value.
Fodder Radish - deep rooting, fast-growing brassica with soil structuring benefits and leafy cover.
Mustard - economical and fast-growing with a fine canopy. Good for early autumn cover and weed suppression.
Stubble Turnip - dual-purpose brassica providing quick bulk and valuable forage or game bird feeding.
Spitfire Kale-Rape - hybrid brassica with the vigour of rape and the hardiness of kale. Excellent for extended cover through the shooting season.
