£225m Capital Grants Open in England

Updated: 2 days ago

The 2026 Capital Grants offer is due to open in July 2026. An exact date has not yet been confirmed (last year, it opened during Groundswell) and the round will close as soon as the budget is committed, so early preparation matters more than ever especially where you need approval from a Catchment Sensitive Farming (CSF) adviser. Speak to us if you need any guidance.

With £225 million available to help farmers and land managers in England invest in nature-friendly farming and improve productivity, sustainability and resilience, that's a significant increase on the £150m made available in 2025. Demand is expected to be high again, so the funding is still likely to be allocated quickly.

How the capital grant offer works

Farmers and land managers can apply for a total of 80 items under the latest round

Capital grants are three-year agreements offering options to achieve specific environmental benefits within six groups. An application can include items from each of these groups:

  • boundaries, trees and orchards (£35,000 max. funding limit)

  • improved water quality (£25,000 max. funding limit)

  • improved air quality (£25,000 max. funding limit)

  • improved natural flood management (£25,000 max. funding limit)

  • assessments, e.g. a wildfire checklist

  • improvements, e.g. education access visits

What changed for 2026 and how to prepare

More supporting evidence is needed upfront and within 10 days of application. After a high number of incomplete applications in 2025 led to delays and rejections, Defra is asking applicants to submit all required evidence with their application. Getting your paperwork ready in advance is important.

The overall number of items has increased to 80. A few new items have been introduced.

Agroforestry items and woodland condition assessments have been removed and will be available through a Higher Tier Capital Grants offer.

Tree guard items have changed. TE6 (tube and mesh) has been withdrawn and replaced by the new TE19 (narrow weld mesh), and the names and specifications for TE7 and TE8 have been updated.

Catchment Sensitive Farming (CSF) support must be in place before opening. 24 items require Catchment Sensitive Farming (CSF) adviser support before the July opening. CSF teams are prioritising visits already requested and are not taking new requests for this round, but if you have received CSF support in the last 2 years for these items, you can use this support when you apply.

Tenant farmers without a tenancy lasting at least five years will need a land ownership

control form countersigned by their landlord.

Business viability checks were done last year and are continued. If your application is for more than £50,000, you will need a letter from a qualified, chartered or certified accountant confirming your business has the funds to carry out the work.

The reopening of this offer is a welcome opportunity to take stock and plan investments that align with both business goals and environmental priorities. Our advisors can help design a plan and guide you through the application process.
