£150m of Capital Grants Announced in England

Updated: Aug 1

👉 [Update] CAPITAL GRANTS OFFER IS NOW CLOSED as of 13:30 on 1st August. Over 8,000 applications have been submitted since it was opened on the 3rd July.

If you started your application but didn’t submit it, unfortunately you won’t be able to continue. There may be some exceptions to this where applicants were unable to submit their application and had sought assistance from the RPA to enable them to submit it. The RPA will assess these on a case-by-case basis and confirm to affected applicants shortly.

👉 [Update] As of 29th July, just under 75% of the available Capital Grant funding has been allocated, based on applications submitted. This round will close as soon as the remaining budget is fully allocated, which is now likely to be a matter of days. At that point, further applications will not be accepted, even if started on the system. Any in-progress applications should be submitted as soon as possible. Call us if you require any support with your application.

Defra has announced the reopening of a new round (open for applications from 3rd July) of its Capital Grants offer worth £150m to help farmers and land managers in England invest in "nature-friendly farming" and improve productivity, sustainability and resilience. The announcement was made during Groundswell, where Environment Secretary Steve Reed also delivered his speech.

Farmers and land managers can apply for a total of 78 items under the latest round, including four new items on woodland condition, wildlife management, stone walls and educational visits.

Capital grants are three-year agreements offering options to achieve specific environmental benefits within six groups. An application can include items from each of these groups:

  • boundaries, trees and orchards (£35,000 max. funding limit)

  • improved water quality (£25,000 max. funding limit)

  • improved air quality (£25,000 max. funding limit)

  • improved natural flood management (£25,000 max. funding limit)

  • assessments, e.g. a wildfire checklist (WF1)

  • improvements, e.g. education access visits (VED1) at £363 per visit, up to 25 visits per farm

You can use the capital grant finder tool on the gov.uk website to look up options. You may need approval from a Catchment Sensitive Farming (CSF) adviser for water and air quality capital items, and you may need to resolve any 'expired' grant options on the RPA system before submitting your application.

⚠️ Following the sudden closure of the previous round in November 2024, we note that this round will close when the available funding is committed and submitting an eligible application does not guarantee funding.

The reopening of this offer is a welcome opportunity to take stock and plan investments that align with both business goals and environmental priorities. Our advisors can help design a plan and guide you through the application process. If you’re considering applying, or simply want to understand what funding is available and how it could fit your farming business, get in touch - we’re here to help.
