Maize

Gamecover Maize is still the most widely used crop on shooting estates, but there is a lot of difference between the varieties. We have access to most of the leading maize breeding programmes and select the variety very carefully, based on visual assessment of many trials, as well as Recommended List data from the U.K. and other Northern European sites.
If you are looking for a Maize variety that is bred with excellent standing power, high yield of cobs and good disease resistance then look no further than Oakbank Maize.

Oakbank Maize

Oakbank Maize is a single variety that will give you cover and feed through the season. The seed has been put through rigorous germination and cold tests to ensure its quality and has been treated with Mesurol, which we still believe to be the most consistent dressing in terms of its insecticide and bird repellent properties. The standing power of Oakbank Maize is excellent and its strong stems help maintain the game cover until the end of the shooting season.

“I know that I can rely on my Oakbank Maize to provide cover right to the end of the season.  Visiting guns often comment on the quality of our game crops and I would recommend Oakbank Maize to everyone!”  BB, Shropshire

Gamecover Maize

Whilst we would advise all our customers to use the Oakbank Maize, we do offer a useful alternative that will provide good cover and feed.  This is a single variety of Maize that is slightly earlier maturing than the Oakbank Maize, but still has good standing power and offers terrific value.

Extra Early Maize - Tixxien

After the success of our very early variety last year, where growers used it to guarantee early feed or tried to get some feed on marginal, elevated sites, we are pleased to offer Tixxien to our clients.  It can be used straight on its own for early feed crops, or it can be mixed in with Oakbank Maize to give a spread of feed availability, whilst maintaining the standing power of the Oakbank Maize for late season cover.

Late –“No Cob” Maize

There is no such thing as a maize that doesn’t cob, but there are varieties that are not going to ripen early enough to produce seed in our climate.  These do have some benefits if you are suffering from problems with badgers, deer and /or rats, but you will then need to feed these areas to hold the birds there.  There is no doubt that pheasants and partridge enjoy the canopy that maize produces and this gives you that without being so attractive to pests.  Alternatives would be the pure cover crops, such as Chicory or Canary Grass, but keepers will tell you that “you can’t beat Maize!”
