Fertiliser

Fertiliser comes in any number of different guises and you need to know the nutrient status of your soil before deciding which fertiliser you need. When people tell us they always put on a ‘compound’ but have no idea what levels of Nitrogen (N), Phosphate (P), or Potassium (K) the ‘compound’ contained, it does not inspire confidence! Some soils are very hungry and others contain inherently high levels of certain nutrients. Get your soils tested to see what you need and buy the fertiliser accordingly. Most game covers have a very short growing season so you need to have most of the fertilizer applied in the seedbed. If you wait for the crop to emerge and then apply fertilizer you are at risk of the weather being dry and none of the fertilizer being made available to the plant.

Micro-nutrients – are often overlooked because basic soil tests do not test for micronutrients. But, even if you have a more expensive soil analysis done to test for micro’s it does not mean that because it is in the soil it is available to the plant. Because of the relatively short growing period that spring sown crops have, any hold up in growth can have a significant effect on the end result and it is often a shortage of micronutrients such as manganese, magnesium and, in the case of brassicas in particular , Boron,  that can prevent the crops from  optimal growth. We supply several trace elements in the form of foliar applied sprays to alleviate or even prevent the symptoms of deficiency from becoming apparent.
