Phase 1 Habitat Surveys

Phase 1 Habitat Survey is a standardised system used in ecological scoping to assess, classify and map habitats. Along with desk surveys, Phase 1 Habitat Surveys are the basic assessment of the likely impact of development on the ecology of a site and adjoining land. They also take into account any evidence of or potential for protected or notable species of wildlife and their habitats.

Phase 1 Habitat Surveys put forward measures that can be undertaken to minimise adverse ecological impacts of developments. They make recommendations in terms of what further surveys and mitigation measures may be required for protected species or habitats. While desk surveys can be undertaken all year round, Phase 1 Habitat Surveys need to be undertaken from April to September.
